Artist's Statement
I was inspired to create this work in order to explore and exploit the fluidity, range of tone, and gestural qualities of ink. As a painter, I create layered, atmospheric, abstract spaces; though usually in a constrained palette of oil paint that employs the play of tonality and hue. In working with the rich dark tones of sumi ink, I let the dramatic and luminous qualities take center stage. Sumi ink is often used in calligraphy, and there is an inherent reference to the gestural qualities of painting with ink. I apply paint using large brushes and scrapers creating a mark-making “alphabet” of my own. Alliteration in this painting describes the repeated marks and gestures telling the story.
