Artist's Statement
My inspiration was the work and politics of Harvey Milk. As an artist and graphic designer, originally from the UK, I wanted to create something that encapsulated this, and pay tribute to his remarkable life. There were no openly gay politicians in Britain during the 1970s, so Harvey Milk’s example led me to re-imagine what was possible.
Referencing a vintage hand-colored print, the piece is a celebration of the young Harvey Milk who served in the US Navy as a diving officer from 1951 to 1955. The witty rainbow life-saver border is superimposed on words and ideas that reflect political motivators of the man, as well as hard-won freedoms that we endeavor to retain to this day.
