Artist's Statement
My collages are meant to be intimate and thought provoking. They should evoke a peaceful, quiet and simultaneously compelling response from viewers.
This piece is made from an antique 1893 edition of Gray’s Anatomy. I use mostly antique paper in my collages. I usually title these oval pieces from the outer-most, or inner-most, piece of the spiral. In this case, “Hepatic Vein” is printed on the outer-most piece.
I started making these spirals a couple of years ago when my body could no longer physically handle the work that I was doing. I was hand-cutting concentric circles with a bare razor blade and my arms had grown numb. I liked the graphic result from the repetitive and methodical process, but needed something besides concentric circles. After playing around with ideas for a while, I came upon these oval spirals.
