“Tween (Anika)” is from a series of expressionistic portraits which evoke intimate and individualistic narratives, and often include a layer of social commentary. I have been working exclusively on the theme since the global health crisis because time with friends and loved ones is limited and the calling to capture them through the ritual of portraiture has been strong. I also want to remember my kids, whom I am allowed to see, “as they are” during this time of intense togetherness. "Tween" features my daughter, a young art student at Oakland School of the Arts. The process has enabled me to think intensely about my family for long periods of time. It has also been a different way of spending time together, which has been quite rewarding and personally important.
