Artist's Statement
Curly Dock, (Rumex cripus): I collect bits of debris I find on the ground in the backyard and around my neighborhood, sticks, stones, leaves, and roots. I look for ones that have personality. I take them into the studio to photograph. They become characters with a story. Is this a loving couple or a pair of aliens?
In 1672, John Josselyn listed Dock among the plants that had sprung up since the English had
come to New England. Nineteenth century writers admonished agriculturalist that the Docks were “evidences of a slovenly farmer.” For hundreds of years, American farmers have been trying to eradicate this European plant. A large Curly Dock can produce 30,000 seeds. Maybe they are aliens.
