Artist's Statement
"Sunset Boulevard" was inspired by a simple change in perspective. I grew up in Nebraska, surrounded by endless, orderly fields--flat and relentlessly unremarkable. Satellite images I discovered online told a different story. From above, the world is a spectacle of color, pattern, and infinite complexity--a gorgeous geometric abstraction. My process begins with a virtual flyover. Industrial fields in the Midwest have circles of pivot irrigation. Marin County farms are small and meandering. City streets form a grid, and rectangles of buildings vie for position. Sunset Boulevard is one of my favorite streets in my favorite city. Its name is the essence of California, where dreams begin. The painting is acrylic on linen, and collaged with pages from a dictionary. In these satellite images I see our society's priorities and the politics of water, land use, and borders. My paintings seek to capture how we impact our world.
