Artist's Statement
Beyond the Physical
A global pandemic was not on my agenda. Cloistered in my studio after “shelter in place” it was no longer business as usual. Separated from my grandson, my family and students, I was powerless to control the situation. My usual approach to making art felt ingenuine. Suddenly I had the urge to express physical power on the canvas. I put my large painting on the floor and with a huge Chinese mop brush, put my entire body into the mark. I found my inner strength as fluid expression in the sanctuary of my studio.
This painting reflects a meditative calm with the assurance of resiliency and resolve to heal the soul. Healing does not mean we are freed from affliction, rather it means we calm our spirit and embrace our condition. We find the inner strength to adapt and connect on levels that are beyond the physical.
