Artist's Statement
This painting is part of an ongoing series of works based on nude video portraits that I began in 2018, exploring the experience of Embodiment. The subjects of the portraits range in age from 9 months to 90 years old. I'm interested in issues of gender, privacy, health, relationship, aging and ageism. Nudity strips off the most basic way of presenting oneself in the world. In editing the video I re-clothe the subjects in environments that are shaped around their story. The work has evolved to include pigment prints of stills from the videos.
The painting Untitled Vision I began as a pigment print from one of these videos. The image stimulated the oil painting, a dialogue between the information already on the canvas and my working method as a painter. The finished painting is a record of the journey from video, to pigment, to paint.
