Artist's Statement
“Perhaps because of the near darkness you can see me” explores ideas of visibility, history, and identity. What do you see when you come in contact with someone who looks different from yourself? Can my blackness only be seen at night when I walk the city streets? Am I invisible day and night? As Black people continue to disappear from the San Francisco landscape I’m exploring ideas of what that may look like.
I create photograms: photographs that are made without the use of a camera. I lay people and objects on top of silver-based photographic paper and then expose it to light to create a silhouette image. This photographic technique typically produces simple representations that emphasize form and structure. However, I create texture by pouring developer onto the photo paper to create depth.
