Artist's Statement
Prophetically appropriate to our time, Picnic was completed before the pandemic. It explores the invisible threats that plague my motherly instincts and manifest in my children’s make-believe play. Picnic celebrates the simple joys of childhood with pink icing and cups of blue lemonade, while strange props intermingle. Despite a subtly threatening environment, the children are adapting with grace and tenacity.
I paint girlhood where character and identity are forming quietly beneath the surface. The paintings reveal strong and dignified women-to-be who grapple with their world through the serious work of imaginative play. I contemplate their safety and surroundings as they pause in magical moments or quiet introspection. Home interiors, fiery valleys, or muddy shorelines are some of the places where I document these young future citizens of our planet and society. Each work invites viewers into a multilayered narrative that extends beyond the canvas.
