Artist's Statement
What inspired me to paint “On the Move 1” was a continuation of the work I have been at for the past 50 years. In New York City I drew people in the streets, the subways, bus stations, etc.
A fascination for what people wore, what they carried, how pants and sleeves sagged made me pay attention; it was a sociological tool.
In Berkeley I began paintings of “people in the street”. I sketched, made prints, painted from life as well as from photographs.
There was so much beauty in the folds and the movement and the composition in this figure. There might be pain, but I don’t know; all I can do is observe.
I read somewhere that if you see a painting of someone from the back, you identify with that person, you can step right into their place. Maybe it is all that I can do.
