Bridesmaids, Even is from the Paintings for a Dark Room series began in 2010. Bridesmaids, Even (and The Groomsmen, still in progress) were actually already completed and exhibited by then. One day I looked at them and realized, no, not done. The scanned plastic and plastic-wrapped bridesmaids and groomsmen as a subject worked (for all the obvious reasons) but the execution didn’t go far enough in what really became interesting to me, the rightness/wrongness of even random things, emotional nuance in depth and space, and the transient yet hard nature of boundaries. The goal became the process itself, including hypersticky medium flipped with fluid, scrubbing back work with coarse old brushes, fading and grubby source material and the luxury of spending the time trying as hard as I could to see the unclear, where done just becomes a level of resolution.
