Artist's Statement
The 2017 Tubbs Fire claimed my home and art studio which included works of mine that were irreplaceable. This painting called "The Other Side" was about creating something new. It was painted in a rented studio while my home and studio were being rebuilt. One of the things that inspire my work is a process of building up by layering many layers of paint and other materials, and then removing areas to leave a trace of history. It is a reminder of what I have experienced and learned since 2017. The background is cinderblock and represents the foundation for my new life. Even though I had lost every material possession and escaped through the flames in the middle of the night, I was fortunate that my family and neighbors survived. Inspired by a community that was also going through so much loss and rebirth, I pushed through to begin again.
