Artist's Statement
Social distancing during the pandemic gifted me the luxury of time to convey my observations in a medium I'd abandoned for decades. To admit this—let alone experience it in a world literally aflame—places me in a position of embarrassing privilege. The dichotomy between the peace and creative freedom I enjoy in my home and the cataclysmic upheavals outside couldn’t be more stark.
Earlier in the lockdown I watched my daughter Hannah idle in bed, fusing with her mattress, and was reminded of the hermetic, arrested adolescence of Sleeping Beauty. Painting this scene was my way of freezing her in time. Bored, lethargic, perhaps stunted by this hibernation—but at least cocooned from whatever fresh hell comes next. I hope it provides succor to others watching their own children in this strange vacuum, bracing themselves for the future.
