Artist's Statement
My weavings start with two different photographs. For “Downstream”, I took a photograph of a freeway in Walnut Creek, cut it vertically, and then physically wove it with a second photograph of computer circuit boards which I cut horizontally. Apart from the fact that I’m using archival photo paper, the process is fairly similar to weaving a basket or a reed mat.
I wove in the computer circuit board image less and less as I worked downward so that small squares of circuit board emerge at random creating a pixelated effect, like a river of technological debris flowing down into the unknown future. My essential question to the viewer is, “What lays downstream from the technology we create today?” How are the apps on our phones, our social media platforms, the ways we get news and the ways we transport ourselves through the landscape affecting future generations?
