Artist's Statement
Ishki (Her Mother) was shot in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park this Spring during shelter-in-place. Bringing the focus back to my own body's response to these traumatic times, I worked outside in the wooded areas near my home. After years of working with different mediums, my decision to turn back to self-portraiture was intentional. In the past, it has been a medium I have used to explore my own inner self.
Making Ishki allowed me to step outside of myself for a moment in time and sit with nature in place of a maternal force. As an Urban Indian, my personal relationship with nature has felt fraught. But by allowing myself to venture into the dark parts of the forest, I was able to find places that held me much as a mother would.
