Artist's Statement
I create abstract sculptures out of steel wire by using repetitive textile processes, in this case latch hooking which is a rug making technique. I work with wire instead of traditional fibers, asserting the overlooked potential for strength in what is often considered women's work as well as vulnerability in what is commonly associated with masculinity and industrialization. The expression to sweep something "Under the Rug" refers to an attempt to hide something that is judged as undesirable. For this sculpture, I wanted to recontextualize the material and object along with negative connotations surrounding obsession and control. This piece took seven months to make through obsessively meticulous knotting and hand filing. What could easily be viewed as dysfunctional, in its repetition as well as its lack of utilitarian purpose, is instead presented with acceptance of its abnormality.
