Artist's Statement
My work is inspired by natural things found in my backyard and on daily walks through San Francisco. The way the natural world adapts to the human world, and vice versa, fascinates me. By magnifying that which is small and temporary in nature - flowers, moths, dead birds and other ephemera become poignant reminders of the interdependence and transience of life.

Urban bird 25 started with a beautiful dead bird I found in my backyard.  It had crashed into a window and died- estimates say that over a billion birds die every year in the US because of window collisions. I enlarged the tiny, precious Dark-eyed Junco to roughly the scale of a human to suggest the interconnectedness and fragility of all living things. Death has been thrust in our face by Covid 19 in a way that is new and unsettling but there is also beauty in the impermanence.
