Artist's Statement
This piece is a tribute to the ever-present contributions of farmworkers, especially now during the COVID 19 pandemic. Their indispensable labor continues, despite the risks to their health and safety from the virus, nearby wildfires, or unsafe working conditions. Between 50-75 percent of the people who grow, harvest, and process the food we eat are undocumented. During this coronavirus crisis, these farmworkers are living with a peculiar irony: they are now considered both illegal and essential. To some degree, Latinx immigrants and their work have always been invisible, and their integral role in our society has not been properly recognized. Through my artwork, I seek to make visible the humanity of these farmworkers and essential workers, and grant them the recognition we all deserve.
