Artist's Statement
I traveled to Morocco in the winter of 2017, and was enchanted by the Arab / Berber / North African cultures. We traveled from the Atlantic to Marrakesh, up into the Atlas Mountains, out into the Sahara Desert, on to Fez, then north to Chefchaouen,“the blue village” before crossing into Spain. The layered ancient souks, the extreme light and shadow of the desert, and the exotic color palette, were all novel to my eye. I began my Maroc Series after I returned to my studio. My photos from Morocco were a jumping off point. From there I simplified forms, added shapes & colors, pushing the composition more into abstraction. The deep history, secrets & mysteries of North Africa fueled my imagination.
