Artist Statement
The subject matter for my paintings has always been views of California, predominantly
landscapes and cityscapes of the Bay Area. I am attracted to patterns of fields, structures,
and windows, and tend to work with them in flattened banded compositions that
emphasize extreme foreground to background movement.
This piece was the result of a recent effort to make the landscapes and cityscapes more
cohesive by finding scenes combining elements of both. This view of Portrero Hill homes,
as seen from Buena Vista Park, includes the Bay and the East Bay in the background.
It’s an iconic San Francisco neighborhood, and I was pleased to find a view that placed it within the larger environment of the Bay Area.
