Artist's Statement
For two decades I have had my feet in two very different endeavors, that of the art world and of the maritime industry. My labor on the water has taken me around the globe on international containerships, commercial fishing vessels, and sailing boats. The ports and people I have worked alongside have become intertwined with the layers of my art, a visual story-telling based on personal experience but reaching back into the history of maritime exploration, colonialism, and ultimately to our basic human relationship with the oceans. This work in particular is inspired by my view from the bridge of a ship as a watch-standing "able bodied sailor" on a typical day at sea.
