Artist's Statement
“Dry grass singing” is a part of my new series: Wasteland. The paintings are an exploration of trauma, disillusion, and dislocation. The theme is brought to life through a combination of abstracted and representational imagery: dead trees, destroyed houses, figures adrift, and natural disasters. The imagery is reinforced by a variety of painting processes. The paint is scraped, poured, removed, layered, and scratched on and off the surface. The title of the series comes from T.S. Eliot’s post-WWI poem, The Waste Land, which is deeply relevant to our current existential crisis--the Covid pandemic.
