Artist's Statement
I had never drawn or painted in my life until six years ago. My affinity for painting surprised everyone around me not the least of all, me.
Gallery JS was inspired by a visit to Crown Point Press in San Francisco on a late Fall afternoon. The light in the room created a unique quality almost as if the gallery was a living entity.
I emphasize the strong, varied, and overlapping geometries. A central dark imposing pillar outside the window was removed. I heightened the shadows and reflections and warmed the light to create a mood. The lone young woman was added with purpose, solitary and contemplative.
The painting pays tribute to an inspiring, humble, and brilliant art instructor, JS, who skillfully introduced me to the worlds of drawing and painting. There is also a nod to Wayne Thiebaud and his art.
