Peripheries: Subterraneous Symbiosis
My work explores the disintegration of buildings and structures due to neglect or the forces of nature. The previously unseen layers which are revealed by this slow-moving deconstruction can offer unexpected beauty and historical narrative.
This piece looks at the beautiful secret world beneath the piers around the edge of San Francisco. My process involves the interaction of collage with paint to hint at hidden narratives beneath the surface of our visual urban experience. Here, layers of ripped street-posters create the ribbed texture of old wood, at the same time alluding to other lives and times. The subject of the painting, that of the new overtaking the old, is bittersweet: the disintegration of old wooden posts, symbols of long-departed industry, is hastened by the growth of beautiful barnacle blooms reminding us that nature will persevere and that nothing is permanent.
