Point Richmond Rail Pier #3
The historic Santa Fe Railway had its western terminus in Point Richmond, where it unloaded its passengers and cargo onto San Francisco-bound ferries. The ferry service ended in 1975 and the pier was severely damaged by fire in 1984. Now the blackened structure stands in near-silhouette against the sun-dappled water beneath.
To convey the color and texture of the charred wood and rusty rails my process involves the interaction of collage and paint. Fragments of old street posters create a haphazard layered effect which is contained and enlivened by the paint. The collage also alludes to the layers of narrative woven into the fabric of our urban environment. Between the layers I am considering issues of urban renewal and the tide of gentrification sweeping over our cities
