Artist's Statement
Icarus 2.0 is my visceral response to the cascading events that appear to be undoing our civility and our societies. Like Icarus, we are ignoring caution through our hubris and melting the carefully constructed mechanisms that keep us from our own destruction. That said, hidden in the distress of this perspective, Icarus 2.0 offers optimism. From afar, Icarus 2.0 shimmers like a lure, like the sun that drew Icarus, but unlike Icarus, when we “fall” into the piece, we unexpectedly find, through discovering fragments of toys that we recognize, a gateway to our youth when we were more free to imagine. This discovery may remind us that with the openness of childhood, we can imagine a way to futures that avoid the self-destructive course we appear to be on. It is at once a warning and an invitation.
