Artist's Statement
I created “Aftermath” (stain and resin inlay on mahogany) to challenge myself and the viewer. I’m new to woodworking and, in contrast to canvas or paper, wood demands cooperation: Beauty isn’t just layered on, it is brought out. The challenge for the artist is to partner with the wood and to discover how the wood’s character complements the image and the image compliments the wood. I’m drawn to this particular image (a photograph I took in NYC) for its ambiguity and the effort it takes to interpret. Though apparently abstract, it is literal, true to the original. This image straddles other contradictions, as well, yet stays balanced. Glass but wood, old but modern, at once structured and distorted, contained and rebellious, orderly and wild. It moves, like water, stressing its frame. The viewer is left without an obvious exit, compelled to stare and to decipher.
