Artist's Statement
No signs of virus or pandemic when I painted this painting of hands playing Chinese mahjong in 2018. At the time I was painting a series of hands doing activities that tell stories of Chinese culture. Playing mahjong is a traditional activity for social gatherings, intellectually stimulating besides fun.
When I was entering to the de Young Open show, we’ve already been in the shelter-in-place for almost 3 months. It struck me how special and profound this take it for granted activity would mean to us during this uncertain time. Family and friends siting close to each other indoors playing a game of mahjong having fun would be unthinkable during the pandemic. I am glad I painted this moment of human closeness.
