Artist's Statement
Mechanical Woman was executed during my residency on board USS Hornet Aircraft Carrier and it is based on an R-1830 engine from a World War II patrol aircraft.
I initially conceived of the piece as one in a series of machine portraits. Originally, I had no intention of wrapping her in a polka dot ribbon, and ribbons had never appeared in any of my machine portraits. After many weeks working aboard the ship, I developed a desire to bring out the feminine aspect of these machines. Afterall, many were built here in the Bay Area by hard-working women on the home front, like the iconic Rosie the Riveter. The sensuous curves and strength of character expressed in the abstracted forms on this majestic machine inspired me to name the piece “Mechanical Woman” and adorn her with a ribbon.
Mechanical Woman pays tribute to the nobility and power of machines in service of humanity, and to the strength and determination of the women who helped build them. In that sense, the piece is a mechanistic portrait of Rosie the Riveter.
