Artist's Statement
The inspiration of this work comes from my Buddhist meditation practice. At the core of it, is the notion of letting go of the subjective aesthetic judgement during the mark-making. This allows chance to unleash the potential of the process itself. First I splash random stains on the paper with ink drops. Then I trace the edges of these stains, which results in a first group of lines. After that, I try to copy these lines as faithfully as possible. I repeat this process until the lines reach the edges of the paper. If an accident happens, it’ll be copied as part of the lines in the next iteration. Attention is paid to replicating the formal and energetic ‘tendencies’ in the lines, without imposing any subjective aesthetic judgements. Over time, the ‘tendencies’ in the lines are amplified serially, producing an effect of some energetic forces manifesting on the paper.
