Artist's Statement
Jill McLennan is a professional painter and teaching artist living in Oakland for 20 years. McLennan‘s art documents the evolution of the Bay Area, combining direct observation, imagination and a glimmer of hope, she records Oakland’s development and displacement. As she explores her rapidly changing city, she can’t help but feel like she’s surrounded by a crane forest. Around every corner, she finds towering cranes and steel frames, new buildings, and unrecognizable skylines. Her paintings, prints and mixed media works combine photos, sketches and observations of this evolving landscape, emphasizing how nature intertwines with city life. She looks towards a future where humans can live in harmony with nature as native cultures did and do, using perspective as a lens for travel through time and space. How can we find balance in the discomfort of our urban spaces? Why is progress defined by concrete and steel rather than trees? How can urban spaces provide a more equitable balance between human beings and nature?
