Artist's Statement
The painting “West Oakland from the Train” is based on a series of photos I took commuting to my studio in the Mission from Berkeley. I love the moment when the train emerges from underneath the Bay and the view opens up onto the combination of industrial infrastructure and the houses in West Oakland. It’s visually stimulating because many homes are painted in bright colors and I love how in this image the stark light hits the rooftops and houses’ sides. The BART rails are situated just high enough so that one can glimpse into the backyards decorated with graffiti and housing community gardening projects.
