Artist's Statement
For this painting, “Woman with Her Piano,” I used a found black & white snapshot for reference. I was drawn to the image because of the self-assured ownership the pictured woman exudes as she is standing in front of the piano. So many of the snapshots from the 1960s that I’ve found show men proudly standing in front of their shiny new cars. So this is a rather unusual snapshot. I like that the woman is inhibiting the space with confidence and a palpable sense of ownership. I imagine that the piano was an instrument for her own self-expression, and that she was very good at it because of the trophies lined up behind her.
