Artist's Statement
California Street Climb is a recent “constructed” or “layered” painting featuring a San Francisco subject painted on a cast plaster surface that emulates canvas. The rigid plaster surface allows for broken edges, chipped corners—whole sheared away passages— where small, hand-modeled matrices of plaster and wood reveal the painting’s underlying architecture. A whole world opens below—mosaic-like underpinnings, cracks and rifts, labyrinths of color and geometry, a peeled back world at once cubist and digital. The final effect is an unusual journey of eye, below surface, beyond present, a glimpse of hidden archeology.
"Gaze deeply. Peel back the recognizable, the luscious paint, the fine line, deeper and deeper until you’re at the origin, the subject’s core beauty and ancient pulse. "
