Artist's Statement
I’m fascinated with tenebrist lighting and chiaroscuro. As a painter, a single light source in a dark interior provides me with problems to solve and offers a vehicle for exploring the darker side. The original Happy Birthday image began as a small 'new baby' painting for my nephew's first child. When I enlarged the image here, I realized that it might not be such a happy birthday and that in these times the painting becomes more prescient. What sort of world are we offering this birthday child.
