Artist's Statement
“My Flooding Fields” began as a base layer for one of my “Excavation” series paintings (in website: michaelnewhall.com), a series of dense pattern-field paintings with overlaid imagery. This one started from a small overexposed photo, its source unknown. A friend encouraged me paint it as is, not bury it in a texture of images as I was doing, and so I took his advice. I converted the overexposed parts to flooding fields, with the industrial background as implicit causation. And I kept a retro, faux-antique tonality for a reason initially unknown to me, but later realized it was perhaps so it could be read as if an older image seen in future times, showing how our ecological ignorance once was. The painting absorbed other meanings to me as it went along - nostalgia for my rural past, our disconnection from the earth, the remembrance of being of a specific place.
