Artist's Statement
Hart has been exploring portraiture for over 30 years using traditional media to deepen her understanding of the human condition. She has two pieces on show, both women (a departure for the artist). With this piece, titled “I See You”, the artist is taking a direct look into how suffering manifests. The title is a play on ICU, or Intensive Care Unit, with indirect referencing to roles traditionally held by women, both as nurses and as mothers of patients. The subject of this portrait is everywoman, here making unmediated connection with the audience through her direct and unflinching gaze - in direct contradiction to the dispassionate stance of the Post Modern.
It is possibly this unflinching documentation of truth that defines Hart's work, that she intends to involve and discomfort the viewer, to the extent that looking becomes an emotional strain.
