Artist's Statement
Hart has been exploring portraiture for over 30 years to deepen her understanding of the human condition. She has two pieces on show, both women (a departure for the artist). With this piece, “The Edge”, the artist is exploring the fine line between erotic pleasure and pain. The work takes an unrepentant look at sexuality and its relation to the complexities of interpersonal dynamics. She uses the ambiguity paint affords her by calling into question the reading through, for example, the treatment of the subjects' lips. Are we looking at blood or are we looking at lipstick? The audience is immediately involved and playing a role as the subject looks unflinchingly out from the canvas, not allowing us to look away. Historically, pleasure and pain can play complementary roles and in this piece, Hart explores this landscape and its rich offering.
