Artist's Statement
My painting, The Standing Stones of Carnac, was inspired by this remarkable site in Brittany, which consists of thousands of upright stones, some over four meters high, arranged in long parallel lines. Archaeologists believe they were erected some 5000 years ago, during the Neolithic period. No one knows why these people went to such effort, and what significance the alignments had. We can only wonder. The stones themselves are natural works of art, covered with gorgeous lichens which themselves may be hundreds of years old. My challenge in this painting was to detail the beautiful lichens on one stone, while at the same time giving a glimpse of the mysterious and ancient place in which it stood.
