Artist's Statement
May Running Stitches is part of a series I created in 2018 by running 1000 miles in San Francisco. It's a meditation on the relationship between my step, my breath, and my stitch. Why? Because about a decade ago I was run over by a truck on Market St. I should have died but didn't. This piece is a celebration of being alive. To make it, I wore the fabric next to my skin each time I went for a run. I tracked the runs using run tracking apps, then stitched these maps and the corresponding dates onto the sweat crystalized fabric. I solicited sponsors and incorporated their logos along the bottom of the piece and on the back side I machine sewed my May race bibs as a type of signature. May Running Stitches is both a documentation of my life and routine as well as a study on the resilience of the human body after trauma.
