Artist's Statement
“Curlers going shopping” was inspired by a very familiar scene from our childhood when our mothers wore their curlers as a private ritual towards beauty and also from black and white photos of other women in the 1970’s. This specific image shows two women in public with the hair up in curlers, which were a very common hair process routine at that time and place, so we thought it would be fun to bring that up to the light again.
Our work often investigates private vs. public human habits or space, and this artwork represents a balanced mix of those two elements. The contrast of the two well-dressed women with their hair not done yet feels intimate and misplaced in the supermarket, which made a cool and surprising visual for the viewers.
