Artist's Statement
In my photographic travels I look for unique qualities that are expressed in the exterior of homes. This is what makes them homes, not just houses; the vestiges of culture, origins and identity invested in them. During these months of "sheltering in place" this series has taken on new meaning for me. These solitary houses speak of physical and social isolation; both the safety and comfort and the loneliness and exile of home. The home's exterior becomes a way to reach out to others conveying who lives within these walls and what is important to them. The project also looks at Americana as it is expressed in the small towns that are potentially at pivotal points in terms of their populations. People are moving away from densely populated cities and resettling in the smaller towns across the country looking for lower population density, lower cost of of living, plentiful land, and potential for re-gentrification. Many of the houses I photograph for this project will eventually be torn down and built anew as populations shift.
