Artist's Statement
Murmurations is a series of 'collective self-portraits': abstract visualizations inspired by flocking patterns found in nature.
Comprised entirely of selfies, the series explores how social media influences behavior and the large-scale patterns that emerge as a result. Murmurations #22 utilizes thousands of publicly posted selfies taken in front of street murals of painted wings.
In my work, I'm interested in using data as a tool for hopeful optimism: as a reminder that we're not alone and that the world is better when we recognize our commonalities. This is how Murmurations was born. I wanted to explore how the ultimate act of individualism—the selfie—was, in fact, part of a much larger pattern of human behavior. When exposed, these patterns reveal another layer of beauty that lies within the human condition, and observing these patterns may offer new ways of understanding ourselves.
