Artist's Statement
The way we as humans communicate with one another can often be met with complexity and barriers. These barriers exist in the historical relevance of culture or the nuance of an unfamiliar language and they exist in the hastened comprehension of friend or foe. However there also exists within these moments a clear path through to interpret the scrambled code that we as humans instinctively express with what could be as soft as a breeze or as painful as the touch of a flame. I submit my work as an exploration of gestures. I choose portraiture as a way to narrate the story of gesture by expressing the relationship of emotion to the posture and articulation of the subjects. Move past the barrier of the individual's identity and begin developing a response to an already extended greeting, warning, threat, or blessing as you can then also exist in these moments.
