Artist's Statement
This piece is part of a series based loosely on the idea of the growth rings visible in a cross section of a tree trunk. Cross sections of very large trees, as sometimes seen in a natural history exhibit, are often marked to show the growth of the tree at the time of particular historical events. I began the series as a meditation on the passing and witnessing of time, although significant events in my marking of time are not visible.
