“Zion”, 2019
When I began teaching art at an Oakland public high school, I never imagined that the experience would inspire my painting practice:
One morning, Zion came into my advanced art class at Oakland High School wearing a swirling, bright blue hair piece.
Her presence triggered myriad associations and immediately inspired me to paint her.
Zion’s talent, ceaseless energy and imagination made her stand out from the 183 students that I taught daily.
She went on to Clark University.
This painting is part of a series of paintings of talented Oakland High School students and staff that includes a survivor of the Cambodia killing fields, a teacher and LGBTQ activist.
I was born and raised in Paradise California, attended art schools in California and have exhibited my large-scale paintings, installations and performance work in New York, Boston and San Francisco.
I recently retired from OUSD and am painting both commissioned portraits and large-scale work confronting major social issues.
