Artist's Statement
Shara Mays is an artist whose work questions the social and psychological construct of blackness in contemporary American society. Born in Princeville, North Carolina and now living in Oakland, California, her multi-disciplinary practice moves through painting, drawing, and sculpture. Mays earned an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and a BFA from the George Washington University School of the Arts and Design in Washington, D.C.

Censoring Myself with Fig Leaves explores the politics of identity and how it manifests into the psychology of a person of color. The work questions what role culture plays in shaping one’s public and private spaces. Symbols and motifs such as fig leaves—historically used in the history of western art to censor nudity in paintings and sculpture—evolve into contemporary significance, sparking discourse on concepts such as concealment, censorship, and the idea that one must conform in order to succeed.
