Artist's Statement
Maya:
Maya was inspired when noticing children participate in Native American and Mexica gatherings.
Watching how elders take them by the hand and teaching them about dance, regalia and ceremony is not only beautiful but an important way of reclaiming traditions that have been outlawed in the past and is constantly on the edge of disappearing.
Encouraging younger generations to learn and participate in traditions is essential for ensuring that our culture lives on especially in a world that is constantly changing.
