Artist's Statement
In Firebird Enticed with Apples (Honoring Maria Tallchief) I explore my mixed Native heritage through the term apple which symbolizes a Native considered to be “white” on the inside, a Native who emulates American” culture, or is mixed heritage. As an adult I became fascinated about my ancestry and began to research the historical, and contemporary experience of Natives. Researching, I read “American Indian Stories by author Zitkala-Sa, a mixed heritage writer, musician and activist of Dakota Sioux, and Irish ancestry. The chapter “Red Apples” shared her experience of being enticed with red apples by an Indian boarding school missionary. I read on Maria Tallchief, Americas first Prima Ballerina who happened to be Osage, and Irish. Both Native women experienced inner conflicts on being mixed, while maintaining pride and connection to their Native heritage. This artwork brings light to the often-concealed history of phenomenal Native women and celebrates Maria Tallchief.
